Tucked in the Lodi Colony Market of Delhi, The Bookshop Inc. is more than just a bookstore—it’s a sanctuary for book lovers. Known for its carefully curated selection, this independent bookstore offers an escape from bestseller lists, instead championing translations, small-press titles, and hidden literary gems.

A Legacy Reimagined

The Bookshop Inc. carries forward the spirit of K.D. Singh’s original bookstore, which first opened in Jor Bagh in 1971 and sadly shut down in October 2023. Revived by Sonal Narain, a former partner, the new space retains echoes of the past—mirrored ceilings and towering wooden bookshelves, inviting book lovers to get lost in its cozy, nostalgic atmosphere.

A Space for Literary Encounters

Beyond its inviting cane stools and warm crimson door, The Bookshop Inc. is a hub for Delhi’s intellectual and cultural life. Its evening events feature renowned authors, scholars, and commentators, including Ramachandra Guha, William Dalrymple, Joe Sacco, and Ravish Kumar. The store also hosts screenings, recitals, and pop-up second-hand book sales—affectionately called ‘After-School Patri.’

New Book Clubs for Literary Explorers

Expanding its commitment to literature, The Bookshop Inc. has launched three quarterly book clubs:
Backlist Titles – A deep dive into overlooked but still-relevant books.
Food Writing – Exploring narratives around food and culture.
Fiction in Translation – Bringing global literature to Delhi’s readers.

Co-owner Mahika Chaturvedi, who also manages the bookstore’s social media, sees the store as a place of respite and inspiration. “People come here to remember that they’re not just a cog in the wheel,” she says, reinforcing the store’s mission of fostering meaningful literary conversations.

Final Thoughts

With its rich history, thoughtful curation, and vibrant literary programming, The Bookshop Inc. is shaping up to be an indispensable part of Delhi’s reading culture. Whether you’re looking for a quiet browsing session, a thought-provoking discussion, or a chance encounter with a rare book, this bookstore promises a unique literary experience.
